... that our Department started from humble beginnings? On his arrival on 25 June 1804, Deputy Commissary Leonard Fosbrook took up the position of Finance and Procurement Officer for the Colony of Van Diemen’s Land. He did have some assistance, with a staff of eight provided. However, they were all convicts.

By 1826 the number of staff working in the Colonial Treasurer’s Department had increased to five. By 1896 the number of staff had increased to 16.

It wasn’t until after the Second World War that the functions and number of staff in the Department grew markedly. In 1947 there were 37 permanent staff; by 1956 there were 70, and by 1967 there were 162 staff. Today there are 324 staff in the Department.
