Did you know... ... that, in 1827, under a new direction from the British Treasury, all officers who collected revenue in Van Diemen’s Land were required to pay money “fortnightly to the Colonial Treasurer with personal commissions no longer being deducted”?
At 10 o’clock every Monday morning, the Colonial Treasurer, the Collector of Customs and the Head of the Commissariat sent to the Colonial Secretary a weekly abstract of receipts and payments. All accounts were kept on prescribed forms, with financial transactions classified as “Ordinary”, “Extraordinary” and “Contingent”.

Parliament House
The building was originally designed as a Customs House. The Customs Department shared it with the Legislative Council from 1841, and with both houses of the Tasmanian Parliament between 1856 and 1902.
