Associated Entities and Statutory Authorities

We provide support to the following associated entities:

Government Prices Oversight Commission (GPOC)

We support the activities of GPOC, an independent body established under the Government Prices Oversight Act 1995, in its responsibilities for:

  • investigating and making recommendations on maximum prices for government businesses that are monopoly suppliers of goods and services;
  • undertaking investigations in accordance with terms of reference that may be issued by the relevant Minister from time to time; and
  • investigating competitive neutrality complaints against both State and Local Government, as required under the National Competition Policy.

Office of the Tasmanian Energy Regulator

We support the activities of the Tasmanian Energy Regulator who is responsible for:

  • setting maximum prices for the sale and supply of ‘declared’ electricity services (retail and distribution);
  • issuing licences for electricity generation, and licences for the distribution, transmission and retail operations of both gas and electricity;
  • ensuring that energy industry participants comply with strict service and supply standards;
  • promoting efficiency and competition in the energy supply industry;
  • administering the Tasmanian electricity and gas codes; and
  • protecting the interests of consumers of electricity and gas.

Licensing Board of Tasmania

We provide administrative support to the Licensing Board, an independent body established under the Liquor Licensing Act 1990.

The board is responsible for:

  • hearing applications for new liquor licences and, in accordance with the Act, making decisions that are in the best interests of the community;
  • deciding on applications by the Commissioner for Licensing to cancel or suspend licences; and
  • hearing appeals made against decisions of the Commissioner.

The board is separate and independent from the Commissioner, and a decision of the board is final and without appeal.

Tasmanian Gaming Commission

We provide administrative support to the Tasmanian Gaming Commission, an independent body established under the Gaming Control Act 1993.

The commission’s functions are to:

  • regulate and control gaming to ensure that it is conducted honestly and is free from criminal influence and exploitation;
  • approve internal control, administrative and accounting procedures, rules and conditions in relation to gaming activities, and to determine disciplinary matters;
  • investigate and make recommendations to the Minister on gaming regulatory matters;
  • research and investigate matters relating to gaming, including the probity and financial stability of people involved in the conduct of gaming operations;
  • liaise with other authorities and people responsible for the regulation and control of the conduct of gaming;
  • investigate and resolve complaints relating to the conduct of gaming;
  • oversee the administration of the Community Support Levy, and recommend and report on annual/quarterly budgets to the Treasurer; and
  • perform such other functions as are required by the Gaming Control Act 1993 and the TT-Line Gaming Act 1993.

*The Public Works Tender Board (Revocation) Order 2006 set the effective date for the cessation of operation of both the Public Works Tender Board Order 1997 and the associated Public Works Tender Board Guidelines as at 14 August 2006. New Treasurer’s Instructions relating to building and construction/roads and bridges procurement have been issued in their place.
