Cadet and Graduate Programs
Cadet program
Our cadet program is a development initiative that offers participants the opportunity to work and gain experience while studying part time for an appropriate degree. During the program, participants work in various branches in the Department, usually on a twelve-monthly basis, so that they can gain experience and develop skills in a variety of areas.
Our cadets undertake a range of degrees, including Business and Economics, with majors in disciplines such as accounting, finance, business economics, analytical economics and public policy.
Our cadet program provides participants with skills and abilities that they can use to enhance their future careers. Cadets undertake a wide range of tasks, including: the preparation of economic and statistical reports and correspondence; helping in the preparation of Financial Statements, Budget Papers and Budget Estimates; maintaining various electronic databases; and contributing to policy advice to the Government.
The cadet program is normally for six years, but it may be shorter depending on the amount of university study that a new cadet has completed before beginning the program.
In 2006–07 three new cadets were selected to participate in the program, and as at 30 June 2007 there were sixteen cadets in the program.
Graduate program
Treasury requires the skills of qualified accountants to support many of our primary responsibilities. In order to ensure that our workforce has the appropriate skill base, we recruit graduates who have recently completed, or are about to complete, a suitable degree, and are intending to undertake professional accountancy qualifications.
While participating in the finance graduate program, our graduates are placed in the Government Finance and Accounting or Budget Management Branch for periods of up to twelve months, over a three-year period.
Our graduates are involved in a wide range of tasks and projects, including assisting with the preparation of the Budget Papers and Budget Estimates, monitoring agencies’ budget management activities and assisting in the preparation of Financial Statements.
Our finance graduates undertake studies to complete the postgraduate program of CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
In 2006–07 one new graduate was selected to participate in the program, and as at 30 June 2007 there were four graduates in the program.
