Managing Performance

Our corporate, branch and individual performance planning processes are the major tools we use to manage performance.

The Corporate Plan is our primary planning tool. It outlines what tasks we will be doing and why, how we are going to do them, and the resources needed.

The Corporate Plan also provides direction and context for all our branch and major project plans. Each year, our branches develop Branch Operating Plans (and, where appropriate, Project Plans) for all the tasks, activities and projects that we intend to undertake over the coming 12 months. These plans are examined in detail at our annual Corporate Management Group Conference, where priority activities and resource issues are identified for the coming financial year. Before the start of the financial year, we review our Branch Operating Plans to ensure that our activities remain focused on the achievement of the Government’s current objectives and priorities, and that they can be funded.

Every member of our staff has a Performance Management Interview (PMI) with his or her supervisor every six months. This is to provide feedback between staff member and supervisor and to focus the performance of each individual on the achievement of organisational goals.

Our PMI system:

  • plans and agrees key individual actions to ensure that we can all contribute to the achievement of branch outputs;
  • sets standards for individual performance over the next cycle;
  • reviews individual performance in the previous six months;
  • reviews learning and development activities in the previous six months;
  • assesses future learning and development needs; and
  • helps individuals plan and achieve career aspirations.
