For the past few years, Treasury has been operating in a challenging environment of low unemployment, a skills shortage and heightened competition for talent, both nationally and overseas. During 2007-08 we gave priority to developing a strategy for attracting and retaining employees who are high-performing, capable and passionate about their work.
Our first task was to identify what was common to the experience of working at Treasury so that we could articulate and clearly communicate the key features. In late 2007 we held workshops with a cross-section of employees from all branches. Individual sessions were also held with Executive Committee members. After having developed a clearer understanding of what our employees valued about working at Treasury, we were in a better position to communicate the essence of working at Treasury to potential employees. We now look for people who:
We are working towards attaining a high degree of alignment between the expectations of job candidates and the experience that we offer.
We will be developing promotional materials for recruitment that reflect our "employment experience" and updating our careers information.
We will also provide development opportunities for managers to assist them in recruiting and retaining employees who fit our culture.
