On 15 May 2012 the Minister for Energy, the Hon Bryan Green, announced a comprehensive and integrated reform package for the electricity industry that will provide retail competition to all customers, improve the efficiency of the industry and put downward pressure on prices in the short, medium and long term.

The reform package will deliver better outcomes in the areas of:

  • future electricity prices;
  • greater consumer choice;
  • energy security;
  • reliability of the electricity supply network in Tasmania;
  • reduced risk to taxpayers;
  • sustainable State-owned businesses;
  • more efficient and focussed State-owned businesses; and
  • optimising the value for the Tasmanian taxpayer of Tasmanian renewable energy exported over Basslink.

Further information will be released shortly.

An implementation team is being established in Treasury and will work under a formal governance structure that includes the relevant Tasmanian Government agencies and the state’s electricity businesses.

Expert Panel Review

The Electricity Supply Industry Expert Panel Act 2010 established an independent Panel to conduct an investigation into, and provide guidance to the Tasmanian Parliament on, the current position and future development of Tasmania’s electricity industry.

The Panel provided its Final Report to the Treasurer and the Minister for Energy on 29 March 2012, and the Treasurer tabled the report in Parliament on that day.

In completing its review, the Panel published several papers and received many submissions. The Expert Panel’s reports are available here.
