TOTE Tasmania - Regulation under the Gaming Control Act 1993

On 1 July 2009 the Gaming Control Act 1993 was amended to allow for wagering activities of a totalizator operator and corporate bookmakers in Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Gaming Commission is now responsible for regulating the wagering activities of TOTE Tasmania, consistent with other wagering operators in Tasmania.

Wagering operations are licensed under a Tasmanian Gaming Licence.


Tasmanian Gaming Licences

Tasmanian gaming licences allow licence holders to conduct gaming or wagering activities by means of a telecommunications device including internet gaming. Activities that fall under a Tasmanian gaming licence include totalizator activities, sports betting, simulated gaming, betting exchange, race wagering and major lotteries.

Companies applying for a Tasmanian gaming licence must fill out the application for a Tasmanian gaming licence and an associate application form for all Directors and associates of the company.

Individuals applying for a Tasmanian gaming licence must fill out the application for a Tasmanian gaming licence and Associate application form.

The Tasmanian Gaming Commission has approved a number of "Sports Events" on which wagers can be placed in Tasmania. A list of approved sports events is available on the link below.

Corporate Bookmaker Requirements

To operate as a corporate bookmaker in Tasmania, current or potential corporate bookmakers must comply with the requirements of the Gaming Control Act 1993. To assist in identifying obligations under the Act, a series of fact sheets have been prepared. These fact sheets have been developed to cover what is considered to be the main topics impacting on potential operators. Nonetheless, other provisions within the Act may also apply and therefore it is important that potential operators are aware of all their obligations under the Act.
