Debits duty was abolished in Tasmania effective 1 July 2005, with debits to taxable accounts in Tasmania on or after that date not incurring debits duty.
A sliding scale of debits duty was charged on accounts held in Tasmania with a cheque drawing facility, whilst a flat rate of 0.15 cents was charged on taxable debits to all other taxable accounts including credit card accounts.
Whilst customers may be charged debits duty after 1 July 2005, this should only relate to debit transactions conducted up until 30 June 2005. Queries in relation to whether debits duty has been correctly charged against your account should be directed to your financial institution in the first instance.
