The First Home Owner Grant commenced on 1 July 2000.
The broad principles of the grant are:
- eligible applicants will be entitled to a one-off payment of up to $7 000.
- eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be Australian citizens or permanent residents and who are buying or building their first home in Australia.
- assistance is not means tested.
- joint applicants will be restricted to a single application for a single property and only one grant will be made.
First home buyers may also be eligible for the First Home Buyers Duty Concession if the buyer has entered into a contract to purchase a house, or build a house as part of a house and land package from 20 May 2004.
