National Competition Policy

Tasmania's Commitment to Revitalising National Competition Policy

On 29 November 2024, the Tasmanian Government joined with the Australian Government and other states and territories in signing two key agreements to renew and strengthen National Competition Policy (NCP):

Through these agreements, Tasmania has committed to implementing updated National Competition Principles and participating in a 10-year reform program supported by the $900 million National Productivity Fund.

The principal objective of NCP is to promote competition within the economy where it is considered to be in the public benefit. The underlying premise is that increased competition in a market leads to greater efficiency and productivity throughout the economy.

National Competition Principles

The Tasmanian Government has agreed to a renewed set of competition principles that build upon the landmark National Competition Principles agreed under the 1995 Competition Principles Agreement (CPA).

The Principles provide the foundation for how governments can promote, remove impediments to, and avoid restricting competition.

Tasmania's plan for the implementation of the National Competition Principles sets out how the principles will be put into effect, including the transition to any new or additional obligations, by 31 December 2026.
