Private social games

​​​​​​This exemption means that low value games of chance can be played between family and friends for social purposes.  

Players must not pay more than $250 to play, and the total amount paid by all players for any game must not be more than $2,000.  All the money must be returned to players as prizes.  

The game must not be played or promoted for commercial purposes and no one other than the players must make a profit or gain. The game must be such that all players have an equal chance of winning​.​


Conditions

Any game played primarily for social purposes, subject to the following conditions:
  • the total contributions do not exceed $2,000;
  • a single participant does not contribute more than $250;
  • the total contributions, without any deduction, are distributed to participants as prizes in money or money's worth;
  • the chances of winning are equally favourable for all participants;
  • the game is not promoted or conducted for commercial purposes, or for the private gain or benefit of anyone other than participants; and
  • only a participant can make a profit or gain, and no person who is organising, managing or supervising the activity receives money or other valuable consideration for doing so.
