Licences

The sale of liquor in Tasmania is regulated by the Liquor Licensing Act 1990 (the Act) and must be authorised by a liquor licence, liquor permit or a general liquor exemption.

A liquor licence:

  • can only be granted to a person and not to a company or club.
  • is required for businesses and organisations that seek to sell liquor on a regular basis. eg. hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants, wholesalers, bottleshops, tourist business operators and larger sporting clubs.
  • must not be granted in connection with the activities of a supermarket.

Applying for a Liquor Licence

It is important to know what business activities you are intending to undertake and how you want to sell liquor. You need to allow sufficient time before commencing your business to gather all of the material you require for your application and also to allow for your application to be assessed and determined.

We aim to determine complete applications within 4 - 6 weeks however some applications may take longer.
