Operating from Hobart and Launceston offices, the Branch provides administrative support to both the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission and the Commissioner for Licensing. The Branch also provides advice to Government on liquor and gambling policy and collects gaming taxes.
The services of the Branch are delivered through five functional teams - licensing, compliance, policy, legal and projects.
Licensing operations
- Supports the regulators in assessing applications for liquor and gambling licences and permits.
- Monitors the number of gaming machine authorities issued under various legislative caps.
- Collects liquor and gaming licence fees.
- Administers the Gaming and Licensing Information System and the Tasmanian Gambling Exclusions Scheme Database.
Compliance unit
- Systems Compliance - monitors and ensures compliance with legislative requirements for gaming systems used by licence holders, including the monitoring operator and keno operator, and for the payment of tax and levies by all gambling operators, including the Point of Consumption Tax
- Investigations team - oversees all investigations and preparation of all disciplinary papers for the Commission and Commissioner for Licensing.
- Southern and Northern Compliance teams - undertakes terrestrial compliance for all liquor licensed premises and all premises undertaking gambling operations (casinos, hotels, clubs and TAB outlets).
Policy unit
- Provides policy advice to the Minister for Finance and government on liquor and gaming matters, including Parliamentary, legislative and regulation processes.
- Provides executive support to the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission and support to the Commissioner for Licensing.
- Supports national policy and regulatory reforms.
- Forecasts gambling tax revenue for the Budget.
- Administers the community support fund.
- Provides communications support to the Branch.
Legal unit
- Provides specialist advice to the Branch.
Project unit
- Supports the implementation of the Player Card Gaming reform in accordance with the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission Ministerial Direction (No. 1) 2022.
