How much can I contribute?
You can contribute as much as you want to your super each year up to the contribution limits. Additional tax will apply if you exceed these limits.
Remember that the limits apply to each individual so both members and their spouse may make contributions up to the limits.
Members who invest a large sum of money into super as a one-off contribution or through regular payments will need to be aware of the limits. For example, Contributory Scheme members who are purchasing service or upgrading past rates of contribution should ensure they do not exceed the limits.
Members who contribute to more than one super scheme will need to ensure their total contributions, across all their super schemes, do not exceed the limit.
How do I increase my contributions, I am a Contributory Scheme member?
Increasing your contribution rate to the Contributory Scheme will increase your overall Contributory Scheme defined benefit.
If you are a Contributory Scheme member you are required to pay fortnightly contributions at the minimum contribution rate of 5% of salary. You can increase your contribution rate in multiples of 1% up to 15% of salary to increase your future benefit. Increasing your contribution rate will give rise to a specified increase in your benefit accrual rate which is used in the calculation of your defined benefit.
You can choose to pay your fortnightly contributions as personal (non-concessional) contributions or by salary sacrifice (concessional) contributions. To increase your contributions, complete the
Contributory Scheme - Election to vary contributions form.
For more information about increasing your contribution rate please read the
Contributory Scheme: Member Booklet.
In addition to increasing your rate of contributions you may, subject to eligibility criteria and payment of the required cost, increase your adjusted benefit multiple factor if you:
- upgrade a period of past contributory service to a higher contribution rate;
- purchase an eligible period of non-contributory service; or
- remove a service penalty.
For more information on upgrading past contributory service and purchasing eligible periods of non-contributory service please read the
Contributory Scheme - Upgrades, purchase of service and service penalty fact sheet.
If you are eligible to receive the super co-contribution, personal contributions to the Contributory Scheme will count towards your entitlement.
